The below is a brief review of a new release I feel is worthy of recommendation. This film was reviewed from a digital screener. Screen and Stage encourages its readers to follow safety precautions outlined by health authorities.
Sound of Metal (Dir. Darius Marder, 2020, in select theaters and streaming on Amazon Prime Video now) - A unique story beautifully told, SOUND OF METAL, about a heavy metal drummer (Riz Ahmed) who begins to go deaf and learns to adjust to his new life, uses its ingenious sound design to stunning effect to immerse the audience in its protagonist’s inner aural life, or lack thereof. Through his extraordinary command of the medium, filmmaker Darius Marder empathetically depicts a community rarely shown on screen and elicits phenomenally intense performances from his actors, particularly Ahmed who carries nearly all of the film’s emotional and dramatic weight with charisma and coiled energy. And, the final scene is unforgettable - it ties the film up perfectly.
