The below is a brief review of a new release I feel is worthy of recommendation. While the film is being released exclusively theatrically, this film was reviewed from a digital screener. Screen and Stage encourages its readers to follow safety precautions outlined by health authorities.
Synchonic (Dirs. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, 2020, in select theaters and drive-ins now) - Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have made a name for themselves with clever, low-budget genre films such as SPRING and THE RESTLESS over the past few years, so it's exciting to see what magic they can work with a bigger budget in their latest film, SYNCHRONIC, about two paramedics (Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan) who begin to investigate a series of bizarre deaths all seemingly related to a drug called Synchronic. Ambitious and visually distinctive (as Benson and Moorhead's films always are) with two strong performances from Mackie and Dornan, SYNCHRONIC is an unusually smart and heartfelt sci-fi film that proves once again that these two filmmakers' careers are ones to follow.
