RITA MORENO: JUST A GIRL WHO DECIDED TO GO FOR IT (Dir. Marien Pérez Riera, 2021, In theaters now) - Far too often, documentary portraits of icons turn into bland, hagiographic love letters that are structurally so conventional that they feel like a glorified school report. The new documentary about EGOT-winner and trailblazer, Rita Moreno, entitled RITA MORENO: JUST A GIRL WHO DECIDED TO GO FOR IT, is affectionate, but it shows a completely human and unfiltered Moreno who is both tough and tender and very frank when speaking about her life. Through a mix of archival footage and new interviews, as well as footage of Moreno going about her day-to-day routine, this invaluable film does justice to a woman whose career stands as a testament to her resilient nature. And, most importantly, this is the rare filmic portrait that's actually worthy of the person it is documenting and celebrating. 4/4
